The Beginner's Guide to Travelling in Surat Thani

Updated: Apr 28, 2019

Thailand is a country with many incredible tourist destinations. One of the provinces that nature lovers are sure to love is Surat Thani. If you have never heard of it, you’re not alone. Surat Thani is underrated, which is why isn’t very well-known among travellers. If you want a travel experience in a city that isn’t too crowded, a trip to Surat Thani is an excellent idea. Although it is not a well-known city in Thailand, there are quite a number of places and activities waiting for you here. If you are interested in this hidden gem, here is a beginner’s guide to travelling in Surat Thani:

Travel to Surat Thani from Bangkok or Phuket

If you are already in Thailand, it is the easiest to start your journey from Bangkok or Phuket and book a flight to Surat Thani. There is one major airport in Surat Thani that has both domestic and international flights coming in and out. The price of the ticket varies depends on the day and season during which you are travelling. You can check the price online before booking a seat. Whether you are travelling from Bangkok or Phuket, you should reach your destination in a mere hour.

Although plane tickets are not that expensive, you can cut down on your budget even more by taking a train from Bangkok to Surat Thani. Train tickets are on sale for around 500-1,000 Thai Baht. The journey from Bangkok will take anywhere from 9 to 13 hours depending on whether you travel during the day or during the night. A night train is a good option for those who wish to save money and arrive well-rested at their destination. Another transport choice is taking an air-conditioned bus. The ticket should set you back around 500 to 600 Thai Baht and come with free snacks and WiFi on board. The journey takes about 10 hours.

The travelling options you have from Phuket to Surat Thani are more or less the same. You may take a bus or fly to the city. Keep in mind that there is no train from Phuket to Surat Thani. Although flying is the most convenient transport, taking a bus is not too bad because the ticket is only 200 Thai Baht for one way and it only takes just a couple of hours to get there.

Visit the night market in Surat Thani

Just because it is an unknown city doesn’t mean that people do not come out and have fun. The night market in Surat Thani is the place that many people come to meet up and shop after a long day at work or school. It is located on the water and boasts a well-decorated surrounding. If you have been to Bangkok or other major cities in Thailand, this night market might feel smaller than the ones in those cities. However, you will get to try the local food, shop the unique clothing, and just enjoy the environment. The advantage of this night market is everything is on sale for super low prices! It is opened every day from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Explore nature at Khao Sok National Park

Although Khao Sok National Park is not situated exactly in Surat Thani, it is only a two-hour drive from the city. If you are not confident in driving in Thailand, you may take a ferry to the national park at the ferry terminal in Surat Thani. There are many adventurous activities at this national park including hiking, canoeing, and river tubing. You will also spot wildlife in the national park. Alternatively, you can spend an afternoon hanging out with the elephants and bathing, grooming, and feeding them. Please be aware that riding elephants is not recommended, and you should not support this kind of business. Make sure that you visit the right elephant sanctuary that rescues and takes care of the elephants well.
